Police say the 19 year old driver who ran a red light and who was under the influence of a controlled substance was driving on a suspended license when his pick-up broadsided a sedan in Oceanside Tuesday afternoon.
Police also say none of the dead or injured were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Three women in the sedan were killed. A teenage girl, her father and grandfather in the same car were injured.
Petra Arango, 40; Rufina Rodriguez, 74; both of Fallbrook and 56-year-old Eloina Aranga of Mexico were identified as the fatalities in the crash at South Coast Highway and Oceanside Blvd., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. Tuesday when a Toyota Tacoma traveling southbound on S. Coast Highway failed to stop at a red light and collided with the family's Mazda on the driver's side.
The 13-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured. Police say the girl is expected to survive. Officers say the girl's father and grandfather were in the front seats of the vehicle and were also seriously injured.
The 19-year-old man driving the Tacoma, identified as Mason Fish, was not injured but later arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
According to DMV records, Fish's driver's license was listed as suspended or revoked on Jan. 26, 2019. Records also showed Fish had been involved in three prior crashes on Dec. 23, 2017; Jan. 25, 2018; and Sept. 5, 2018.
