A cold winter storm brought more rain to most of the county and snow in the local mountains Thursday.
The snow level was expected to drop to at last 3,000 feet or even lower with daytime highs in the mountains in the 30's. As of Noon on Thursday, at least 13 inches of snow had fallen on Mt. Laguna since Wednesday, 8 inches in Julian and several inches in Pine Valley. The National Weather service was expecting additional accumulations into the evening with the snow level dropped to as low as 2,000 feet late tonight.
The storm prompted five area school districts to cancel classes. The county Office of Education said campuses in the Julian Union School District, Julian Union High School District, Mountain Empire Unified School District, Spencer Valley School District and Warner Springs School District were closed Thursday due to inclement weather.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the mountains till 1 a.m. Friday and the CHP warned of hazardous driving conditions.
The National Weather Service in San Diego said they expected icy conditions and considerable snowfall will make travel to the mountains hazardous u til after the storm ends. "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency," the weather service warned.
