2 Girls Found Safe in "Absolute Miracle"

Two young sisters missing from their home in Humboldt County in Northern California are back home after disappearing from their home Friday afternoon.

Leia Carrico, 8, and Caroline Carrico, 5, were found "safe and sound" on Sunday morning by a fire captain and firefighter who had followed the girls' boot tracks. The search had included tracking dogs and helicopters.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said "This is an absolute miracle." He said the girls were cold and were suffering from dehydration but had no injuries and were "in good spirits." The girls were wearing boots and had eaten granola bars at some point. According to the sheriff, the girls were trained in outdoor survival through their local 4-H club and he believes that helped them survive.

The girls were last been seen Friday afternoon about 2:30 pm outside their home in Benbow, a small town located about 200 miles northwest of Sacramento.

Rescuers say they found the granola bar wrappers that helped lead them to the girls in an area that was rugged with conditions that were cold and rainy.
