San Diego turns 250 this year and the city has big plans to celebrate. A San Diego 250 flag was unveiled this morning on the Star Of India kicking off what will be many events celebrating the city's history.
The events include:
4/11/19: First Port, First City
A San Diego 250 commemorative event inspired by the arrival of the Spanish sailing ship, San Antonio, into San Diego Bay 250 years ago to the day. The event brings together the Kumeyaay Nation, public officials, the Maritime Museum and honored guests to share in marking the day that San Diego began. The Maritime Museum’s San Salvador ship will serve as an impressive backdrop to the beautiful gazebo location in Embarcadero Marina Park North. Short presentations and cultural exchange activities will begin at noon, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Educational information panels, light snacks, refreshments and seating will be provided in a covered area adjacent to the gazebo. This event is free to the public.
7/16/19: San Diego 250, Where California Began
We will be bringing everyone together in the location where San Diego began with a civic ceremony to commemorate our shared history. As honored guests, officials and the Kumeyaay Nation gather atop Presidio Park, the sunset stretching for miles across the San Diego region will set the scene as we honor our past and envision our future. Held at the site of the old Spanish presidio, this event will feature a press conference, dedication of the new Kumeyaay flag, VIP tour of the new exhibits at the Junipero Serra Museum, entertainment and refreshments. The public portion of the event will take place in the museum parking lot, tented with seating. Parking and shuttles will be coordinated, as space is limited. Everyone is encouraged to continue this celebration of history and culture in Old Town, following the ceremony. This event is free to the public.
9/14-15/19: Founders' Day Old Town San Diego
Join us in Old Town to celebrate the “birthplace of San Diego” with a weekend of festivities. Rich in heritage and bursting with opportunities to explore, Old Town is not only historically significant, but provides the perfect location for guest to fully immerse themselves in San Diego’s history and celebrate the future. The weekend-long Founders’ Day Festival will feature entertainment, vendors and activities for the whole family. This event is free to the public.
