With a new poll out this week show a lot of support for a way to reduce the risk of large wildfires in California, some are asking the Governor and legislative leaders, what’s the hold up?
The U-C Berkeley Institute Studies Poll, conducted for the L-A Times, reveals support across all political, demographic and geographic lines, with two-thirds of people in all, from every region in the state, saying they like the idea.
That includes almost 85-percent of Democrats, close to 60-percent of Republicans and more than 70-percent of Independents.
So what do so many people in California favor that so far hasn’t been done?
It’s something that the recently retired head of Cal Fire said needs to be done…which is…that government should consider stopping home building in threatened wildfire communities because of the substantial loss of property and lives.
In other words, stop building homes in areas at high risk of wildfires.
But as the L-A Times points out, Governor Newsom told the A-P recently, “There’s something that is truly Californian about the wilderness and the wild and pioneering spirit,” but Newsom adding. “I’m not advocating for no” building.”
Well maybe things should change in California, and as we head into the traditionally peak season for wildfires, the Governor and the state legislature may want to heed the call from the people at Cal Fire who risk their lives fighting our wildfires.
