New restrictions for electric scooters in San Diego just ahead of the city's largest convention of the year.
With the frequency of serious accidents involving the electric scooters in San Diego, it shouldn’t be surprising that during Comic-Con next month at the San Diego Convention Center, scooters will be banned from Harbor Drive which will be closed again this year.
Bikes and skateboards will also be banned. The city and Comic-Con closed Harbor Drive last year for the first time and they say the reaction from Comic- Con'ers was so positive, they decided to close Harbor Drive again this year.
Not only does it provide more space for the thousands and thousands of Comic-Con visitors, but it also makes it safer for pedestrians and also for scooter riders.
And right now the safety of all those electric scooters continues to be a concern. Even with the new regulations going into effect next month in the city that are designed to slow down the scooters especially in busy areas and tourist areas, there are those on the City Council who say more has to be done.
They want the scooters banned complexly from the beach area boardwalks.And that may still happen.
But the serious scooter accidents, those in which people are injured and in at least a couple of cases now, where people have died, have happened in a lot of areas of the city, not just those areas where speed restrictions are going into effect.
While scooters being banned on Harbor Drive during Comic-Con should help reduce accidents, the problem of scooter safety in San Diego is going to remain a problem.
