California Governor Requests Presidential Declaration for Quake Assistance

Governor Gavin Newsom has asked the federal government for assistance following the series of earthquakes to hit the state near Ridgecrest, California.

Governor Newsom received a briefing Saturday morning as response crews continue to assess the damage from Friday evening's 7.1 quake and its 6.4 foreshock on Thursday. No deaths have been reported but there have been countless reports of injuries related to falling debris.

In addition, there have been damage to roads, water and gas lines. A number of fires were reported in the areas closest to the epicenter which is in Kern County, north of Los Angeles. The Governor has declared a state of emergency in that county and in San Bernardino County.

The quake Friday evening was felt from Sacramento to Baja California and in Nevada where an NBA game was stopped. In Anaheim, the rides at Disneyland were stopped so they could be inspected.
