You’re hearing a lot today about the shooting at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro on this date in 1984 when a gunman killed 21 innocent people and wounded 19 others before being shot dead by a San Diego police sniper.
Many people don’t want to remember or think about mass shootings like this, which sadly have become far more common in the U.S. than they were 35 years ago.
But it is important to remember the victims who died that day, including children, and their families and how the actions of one man changed their lives forever.
And it’s also important to remember what happened so we maybe think about what might have been done to prevent all the mass shootings that have happened since the McDonald’s massacre…over the last 35 years.
And make us confront what we could be doing now to prevent even more.
It was just two and a half months ago that our community experienced one of the latest shootings.In Poway, at a synagogue, where a man killed one person and wounded three others.
And on a day marked by the memories of what happened in San Ysidro in 1984, the way to honor the victims and the dozens and dozens of others who have died in mass shootings since….is to finally demand of our lawmakers, our society and ourselves a far greater commitment to ending these tragedies.
