A move forward. Another step. Progress. That’s how media reports are describing what happened at San Diego City Hall Monday.
As the Union Tribune reported it, “San Diego State is one step closer to buying the city of San Diego’s stadium property in Mission Valley….as the City Council voted unanimously to move the deal to its next stage.”
Supporters of what was dubbed SDSU West when it was placed on the ballot and then approved by voters a year ago are undoubtedly pleased.
But it doesn’t mean ground can be broken and construction can begin.
With the City Attorney’s office and the city’s independent budget analyst releasing a report on their concerns, details of the agreement between the city and San Diego State still have to be worked out.
While there is certainly a possibility the deadlines SDSU leaders have set for construction and completion may not be met, for the first time in a long time in San Diego, a major project is moving forward.
Our city’s pride and even its political reputation took hits when the ownership of the former NFL team that called San Diego home for more than a half a century turned its back on our city leaders and on hundreds of thousands of their long suffering fans.
This latest step at City Hall is now being seen by many as a big step toward doing something big in San Diego.
