The mother of a U.S. Army soldier who was hoping for a miracle that would prevent her from being deported has been sent to Mexico.
52-year-old Rocio Gomez, who came to the United States illegally more than 30 years ago, was deported and is now in Tijuana. According to a spokeswoman for her family, she was deported within an hour of turning herself in to immigration officials at the Federal Courthouse in downtown San Diego.
At a morning rally outside the courthouse, members of her family pleaded that she not be deported after living in the U.S. for more than three decades and having a son who is a lieutenant and intellgence officer in the Army.
Gomez’s family says she has spent many years trying to fix her status, but her efforts have been denied.
