San Diego County Congressman Republican Duncan Hunter has announced he will resign on Monday.
According to a letter sent to Governor Gavin Newsom, the resignation will be effective at the close of the business day on January 13, 2020.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50thDistrict, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over the last 11 years,” Hunter concludes in the letter to Governor Gavin Newsom.
Hunter pleaded guilty in December to a federal charge of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use. A few days later, Hunter announced that he would resign after the holidays.
Hunter is scheduled to be sentenced on March 17th in San Diego Federal Court. He faces a possible five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

Gov. Newsom now has the option to call for a special election, wait for the seat to be filled after the 2020 election, or consolidate a special election with a regularly scheduled election, such as the March 2020 Primary. The governor has 14 calendar days after the vacancy to call for a special election, which must then be held within 140 days.
