Some local races were very close at the end of the Tuesday election with thousands of provisional ballots still to count.
The top two vote-getters in each race advance to the November election. Assemblyman Todd Gloria topped the field of candidates in the race to replace Kevin Faulconer as San Diego mayor, and he will face off with City Councilman Scott Sherman in a November runoff unless provisional ballots still to be counted results in a turn-around. Sherman and fellow council member Barbara Bry were battling it out for the second place in Tuesday's election, but with 100 pcts reporting, Sherman finished about 3,000 votes ahead.
Two years after losing a bid to unseat Rep. Duncan Hunter, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar was poised Wednesday to advance to a November runoff election to fill the seat now left vacant by Hunter's resignation. Campa-Najjar topped a nine-candidate field in the traditionally conservative 50th Congressional District to advance to the runoff. Former Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who is seeking to return to the House where he served from 2001-19, was pacing slightly ahead of fellow Republican Carl DeMaio in the race for second place and a trip to the November election.
Measure C, the hotel room tax hike, failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed to pass but with thousands of provision ballots yet to count, the final result is unclear. With 100 pct of precincts reporting as of Wednesday morning, the Yes votes had 63.55 pct, the No votes were at 36.45 pct.
San Diego County voters won't be getting the final say over housing developments in unincorporated areas, thanks to the narrow defeat of a ballot measure in the primary election. Measure A on Tuesday's ballot would have required a countywide vote on any major housing project that involves a change to the county's general plan.
Voters soundly rejected plans for the Newland Sierra housing project north of Escondido, along Interstate 15 and north of Deer Springs Road. If it had been approved, Measure B, also known as the Better Choice Measure, would have upheld the county supervisors' approval of a general plan amendment allowing the Newland Sierra project to go forward.
