San Diego County officials announced Sunday the first death of a San Diego County resident from COVID-19 coronavirus.
According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the man is a San Diego resident, in his early 70s, who was being cared for near San Francisco. Wooten said he had recently returned from a trip to Hawaii.
The San Diego County Health and Human Services agency's Daily Monitoring Report had the total number of coronavirus cases in San Diego County reported as of 5 p.m. Sunday was 205.
Of the 159 people in the county who have tested positive for COVID-19, 135 are county residents, county health officials said. 11 are in federal quarantine and 13 are not county residents
San Diego Based Navy Hospital Ship Deploying to L-A Port
Federal officials announced Sunday the USNS Mercy hospital ship will be deployed to the Port of Los Angeles within the next few days according to President Trump. FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor said that while there are more deaths from coronavirus in the state of Washington, California's health care and hospitals may become overwhelmed without the help of the San Diego based hospital ship at the Port of L-A.
National Guard Authorized in California.
FEMA administrator Pete Gaynor announced Sunday that the President has authorized the use of National Guard troops to California, the state of Washington and New York to assist in efforts to slow the spread of the virus. Trump said, "Through FEMA, the federal government will be funding 100% of the cost of deploying national guard units to carry out approved missions to stop the virus while the governors remain in command."
