Sailor Aboard San Diego Based USS Theodore Roosevelt Dies of COVID-19

A sailor from the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt sailor has died of COVID-19.

The sailor had been in ICU at a Navy hospital in Guam where the ship has been docked as tests continued on the entire crew, with more than 550 sailors testing positive for coronavirus..

The unidentified sailor was admitted to the ICU on April 9 after being found unresponsive during isolation in quarters on Naval Base Guam. Officials said the sailor tested positive for COVID-19 on March 30 and had been under a 14-day quarantine.

Navy officials said after the sailor, after testing positive, "was removed from the ship and placed in an isolation house on Naval Base Guam with four other USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Sailors. Like other Sailors in isolation, he received medical checks twice daily from Navy medical teams."

The former captain of the Roosevelt, Brett Crozier, was relieved of his command by the Acting Navy Secretary early in April after a memo that Crozier had sent to Navy brass pleading for sailors to be taken off the ship due to an outbreak of coronavirus on board became public. The captain himself later tested positive himself. The Navy Secretary resigned after getting criticism from members of Congress and after the President said he was going to get involved.
