For anyone thinking or hoping the coronavirus pandemic was winding down or even going away soon, yesterday was not a good day.
The day started with the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Fauci, telling members of Congress that if states cannot slow the rise in cases, he thinks we could go from 40-thousand new cases a day to 100-thousand new cases a day nationwide.
And a few hours later yesterday, the largest state, our state, California, reported 8,000 new cases of the virus, the highest single day yet.
Arizona, Texas, Florida and at last a dozen other states are also reporting record high numbers of new cases over the last week or so.
Just as some experts warned, the resurgence of the coronavirus is here.
And as Governor Newsom put it this week when asked about a second wave, we’re still in the first wave.
And now as the numbers have gone up, we all see that wave getting bigger.
And just as big waves crashing onto the beach can cause disruption along a coast, this current wave of coronavirus cases is disrupting things once again in our economy and in our lives.
For a while it felt good that things appeared to be at least starting to get back to normal, and unfortunately, too many people and some businesses ignored pleas to socially distanced and wear face coverings.
And now we are seeing pull backs and pauses, re-closings instead of re-openings. And for some of our leaders, and for some of us, maybe a re-thinking of how to deal with this persistent pandemic problem so we can at least get back on the road toward getting where we all want to go…back to normal.
