You knew it was going to happen. The state’s CIF Office announcing that there won’t be any high school football this fall.
It has not been cancelled but it has been postponed..for now…for three months to the winter.
The sounds of Friday night lights, with players playing on the field, cheerleaders cheering on the sidelines and families in the stands pulling for their kids won’t be heard this Fall.
The pandemic of 2020 has interrupted yet another tradition in a year where so many of the things we are used to doing every year, are not happening this year.
A remark by the San Diego Section Commissioner for the CIF Joe Heinz sums up the feelings of most of us, telling the San Diego Union Tribune, “Everyone wants to get back to some kind of normalcy.” We sure do Joe. And it can’t come soon enough, but no one knows for sure when “soon enough” will come.
This week in San Diego is normally filled with the sights and the sounds of Comic Con, but instead of the crowds and the cosplay, the Comic Conners are lined up virtually on their tablets or phones.
And while the Padres 2020 version of Opening Day for a much shortened season is Friday, the sounds of cheering fans won’t be heard because fans are not allowed inside Petco Park.
Yes, the pandemic has quieted the sounds of summer in San Diego for sure. And without a doubt, we all are rooting for a very noisy and active 2021.
