Despite travel advisories not to travel that include quarantining for up toc14 days when you get to California or come back to California, millions of people are travelling.
The Auto Club estimates that up to 85-million people could be travelling before and after Christmas.
And all this travelling to visit others comes as the coronavirus surge from all the travelling ar0und the Thanksgiving holiday is still surging, with many hospitals filling up and ICU beds running out.
A doctor at UCLA told the San Diego Union Tribune the current spread of the virus is like a “full-blown, raging, viral wildfire,” and “it’s just going to take longer” to bring it under control.
It’s not surprising that so many people still choosing to travel this Christmas. Everyone is suffering from pandemic fatigue from nearly 10 months now of shutdowns, lockdowns and staying at home orders. With the vaccines here and vaccinations getting underway, there is light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, but the end is still months and months away.
But because it’s the holiday season in a year that has been anything but a holiday for us, there’s a great desire for Christmas to be what Christmas usually is for most, a time for family and togetherness.
There’s no doubt we need Christmas more this year and that we all wish that things would get back to normal soon.
But the best Christmas gift we could give ourselves and others this year is to not let down our guard and to do the things that will keep more people safe while still celebrating with each other, even from afar.
