After months of ignoring the issue, in hopes that the grassroots Recall movement might just fade away, Governor Gavin Newsom finally acknowledged that it’s likely to qualify for the ballot and responded by lashing out at the people who signed the petition.
Governor Newsom joined the ladies of The View on Tuesday and finally broke his relative silence on the Recall campaign. He called it a partisan, Republican recall, directing supporters to a newly launched anti-recall campaign website that asserts his opponents are just Right-wing “extremists.”
“Just in 25 months there’s been six efforts to put a recall on the ballot. This one appears to have the requisite signatures,” Newsom said on The View.
Newsom has now launched his own website and counter campaign. It’s been dubbed Stop The Republican Recall and includes statements of support from national-level Democratics such as Elizabeth Warren, Stacey Abrams, Cory Booker, Katie Porter, and Bernie Sanders.
"Right-wing Republicans in CA are trying to recall Gavin Newsom for the crime of telling people to wear masks and for listening to scientists during COVID," Sanders said in a statement
Carl DeMaio pointed out that they are just trying to brand this in a partisan manner.
“They’ve done a lot of polling,” DeMaio said. “They are hoping that if they can just keep saying words like ‘racists’ and ‘QAnon’ enough times, it will smear the names of millions of Californians who are part of the most diverse movement that we’ve seen in California politics since the Recall was given to us as a Right back in 1914. He used to call the people supporting the Recall a misfit group of naysayers and doomsdayers, now they are just a bunch anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, white-supremisist, Trump supporters,” DeMaio continued.
The Recall efforts have collected over a half a million more signatures than are required to trigger a special election. Will Newsom be able to collect enough signatures of his own to stop it?
