At least 70 of the migrant teenage girls now being sheltered at the San Diego Convention Center have tested positive for the coronavirus.
A statement released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Monday night said there have been about 70 of the 13 to 17 year old girls who tested positive, at least 27 of whom were tested before their arrival in San Diego starting Saturday night. Other girls tested positive during screening after they arrived at the Convention Center Saturday night or have tested positive since their arrival at the temporary shelter..
The convention center will shelter only girls 13 to 17 years of age. About 500 arrived from Texas last weekend with close to 1,500 in all expected to be house at the federally-run site until mid-July.
The HHS says the first 27 girls who tested positive in Texas were placed on a special quarantine flight to San Diego. They were the first to arrive at the convention center on Saturday night and were taken to a separate area in the center. After their initial screening when they arrive, the girls are tested again for the coronavirus every three days. The children who were exposed to the virus are tested more frequently. The girls all were reported to not have any symptoms but medical staff from Rady Children’s Hospital are on site to respond if needed.
