Why Mother's Day Was What We Needed

Maybe you saw or read some of them. The news over the Mother’s Day weekend was filled with them.

Stories of families seeing other for the first time in a year or more. Here is just a sample of the some of the headlines on some of the stories online this weekend:

‘Mother’s Day 2021: Vaccines and Pandemic Recovery Create Reunions After a Year of Social Distancing’

‘An Emotional Mass Reunion as Grandparents See Grandkids for First Time Since Start of Pandemic’

‘My post-Covid family reunion...was just what I needed.’

Yes, it was an especially emotional Mother’s Day this year. A happy one for most but with more than a half million people dying from COVID-19 since early 2020, for some families it was a day to grieve and remember.

Social distancing is not completely over, but as more and more people become fully vaccinated, we hope the term will become just a memory and not part of our daily lives. Social distancing is not what we as people are about. Humans are made as social creatures, and not being able to be close to other people, most especially our families and our special friends, is hard.

It is not normal, but then most everything has not been normal for quite a while now. Things have started to slowly get back to some kind of normal, and with more vaccinations, the normal we want, is getting closer.

It’s not over yet, but just like the mothers in our lives who did it for us kids, Mother’s Day 2021 gave a lot of us the hope and encouragement we needed.
