San Diego City Council takes up 'ghost gun' ban

UPDATE: The City Council voted eight to one to enact the ordinance. Councilmember Chris Cate was the lone no vote.

SAN DIEGO (KOGO) - The San Diego City Council will take up a proposal Monday to ban so-called "ghost guns."

Ghost guns are firearms without serial numbers, often assembled by hobbyists using gun kits purchased from retailers or private sellers. But an ordinance authored by Councilmember Marni von Wilpert would ban the sale of unserialized gun kits within the city limits.

The ordinance would cut down on crime and save lives, says von Wilpert. This after a recent shooting in the Gaslamp involving a ghost gun took the life of a valet driver.

But Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of San Diego County Gun Owners Association PAC, says the ordinance is unnecessary since state law already prohibits people from owning unserialized firearms. He also said the ordinance would not prevent crime but would punish law abiding gun owners.

The City Council will hear the full proposal during its August 2 meeting.

Reporting partner 10 News interviewed Councilmember von Wilpert about the proposal.
