Numbers are making news this week when it comes to news about the pandemic.
It is now 17 months since the first stay at home order in mid-March of 2020. San Diego County reported Wednesday that the percentage of people who are eligible to get the COVID vaccine who are now fully vaccinated reached 80 percent. And the state’s public health department announced that the positive test rate for the virus is now down to 2.1 percent.
Other numbers making news this week related to the pandemic and its impacts include 24/7, the number of hours each day, now 7 days a week that the shipping ports in California will be operating to help reduce the huge backlog of products that the pandemic helped create.
And then there is the number that reflects what the pandemic and its shutdowns and labor shortages have done to the economy, with the monthly inflation rate in San Diego County rising to 6.5 percent, higher than the national inflation rate of 5.4 percent and the highest it’s been in a long time.
And there was the number about the rise in Social Security benefits of 5.9 percent in the new year, which sounds like good news for those who are on social security, but that could be offset by the rising inflation numbers.
Now we just need to get to the point when we’re not talking anymore about the number of months since the pandemic began, because it will be over.
