California Announces New One Month Indoor Mask Requirement

Californians will have to return to wearing face masks at all indoor public settings -- regardless of vaccination status -- starting this week.

California Department of Public Health officials announced the mask mandate during a Monday afternoon teleconference.

Officials said the requirement takes effect Wednesday, Dec. 15, with the mandate slated to expire Jan. 15.

According to officials, the requirement is being put into place due to a nearly 50% increase in COVID-19 cases since the Thanksgiving holiday.

The state is also tightening the negative test requirements for non-vaccinated people attending mega events of 1,000 people or more. They must now show a negative test within one day of the event. Travelers who return to or visit California are advised to get tested within three to five days of arrival.

San Diego County issues release on new order.
