What the Words We Use Can Say About Us

A new study confirms what we probably already know that the words we speak can say a lot about us.

The study didn’t look at slang or dirty words or bad grammar, which can say a lot about a person. But this study looked at what big words, complex words can say about us.

The researchers say they found that what while what they called complex vocabulary might make you seem very intelligent to those who talk to, a new survey finds using too many big words can also be what they described as a turn-off.

They polled just under 2,000 people and 56 percent said they assume that someone with a complex vocabulary is very smart but most of those people in the survey also believe that using big words doesn’t necessarily mean they are as smart as they sound.

And the survey even found that nearly 60-percent of adults use words they don’t know the meaning of…to just appear smarter. And the researchers say about one in four of those surveyed admit they’re less likely to trust someone using big words in a conversation.

The study is not suggesting that we dumb down how we speak and the words we use but being conversational and still correct would seem to be smarter than using those words that just make you look smart.
