SAN DIEGO (KOGO) - Migrant smugglers are going to new heights to bring people across the border. Border Patrol agents say there's been an increase in smuggling on the Old Otay Mountain Truck Trail, traveling up some 4,000 feet above sea level. The trail is also known as the Minnewawa Truck Trail.
Since July of last year, agents have noted more than 80 confirmed human smuggling events in this area, which has resulted in the arrest of 123 smugglers and about 347 suspected illegal immigrants.
Listen to our interview with Border Patrol Special Operations Supervisor Michael Scappechio below:
According to The Border Report, the old road is one lane, unpaved and barely 13 feet wide in some portions, making it tricky for border agents to respond to incidents in this area. A number of car wrecks can also been seen in the canyons below.
