California Democrats Propose Unemployment Benefits for Illegal Immigrants

California already offers the highest amount of taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants of any state in the nation – and a new welfare proposal would add to the amount of taxpayer funds being diverted to illegal immigrants

From free education to free healthcare, illegal immigrants already receive a wide-range of taxpayer-funded benefits in California – and a new proposal would add to that.

Under AB 2847 sponsored by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella), state Democrats want to give illegal immigrants $300 per week for up to 20 weeks in unemployment benefits. California’s unemployment insurance program faces a $20 billion shortfall already – and California taxpayers are paying some of the highest unemployment taxes in the country already.

“This proposal is outrageous on so many levels,” says Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.

“Not only is California facing a massive deficit in its unemployment program to support legitimate citizens, but now we are being asked to foot the bill for illegal immigrants and provide yet another incentive for illegal immigration to continue,” DeMaio said.

DeMaio also questions whether the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD) can handle the increased workload – citing long delays that citizens faced in 2020 and 2021 just to get their benefits.

Worse, in the past two years independent audits have pegged unemployment fraud in California at more than $20 billion.

“By offering more taxpayer funded free benefits to illegal immigrants, California Democrats are providing perverse incentives to encourage illegal immigration and help human traffickers put these people in really bad situations,” DeMaio concluded.

DeMaio’s organization Reform California says it will oppose any legislator in the upcoming 2022 election who supports AB2847 and urges fed up Californians to join his fight.
