Some of the stories we’ve been hearing about in recent days involving refugees from Ukraine arriving in Tijuana and seeking asylum in the U.S. are raising all kinds of questions.
The story of a 17 year old Ukrainian girl separated from her family at the border and sent to a crowded and cold facility and other stories like it. These cases are raising questions.
Many are asking why is it so hard for refugees from Ukraine where thousands have been killed by Russian forces to get into the U.S after our government said it will welcome at least 100,000 of them.
But at the same time, many are asking why Ukrainians fleeing persecution and death are now being allowed into the U.S a lot more quickly while those fleeing persecution and threats of death in other countries still wait for months if not years to be allowed into the U.S.
One thing is for sure. What’s happening to some of these Ukrainian refugees is drawing new attention to U.S. immigration policy which has been argued about for decades that maybe will lead to a new look at it.
The San Diego Union Tribune suggested so this week, in saying this: ‘A Ukrainian woman was sent to a Louisiana detention center. Then everything changed at the border.’ For Ukrainians definitely. But for others maybe not.
Many are suggesting that now is the time for our government leaders to end the fighting over immigration and get both sides to actually work together to make it just and fair.
