In honor of Earth Day there are numerous events taking place this weekend where you can join fellow San Diego residents to clean up public areas, but if you're interested in cleaning up your own little spot of earth and getting rid of the items that can't be taken by your trash service, check out these FREE events taking place on Saturday, April 23, 2022.
Caltrans Clean California Dump Day
Saturday, April 23 | 8am - 12noon
Caltrans Kearny Mesa Yard - 7179 Opportunity Road, San Diego
Dump Day events help prevent illegal dumping along highways and roads by giving people throughout the state a convenient place to dispose of bulky items safely, properly, and at no cost. Staff will be on-site to accept (non-hazardous) waste and approved debris at no charge, including:
- Tires (must be separated from rims)
- Metal
- Plastic
- Fiberglass
- Fabric
- Glass
- Asphalt
- Dirt
- Concrete
- Wood
- Mattresses
- Household appliances
- Landscape trimmings
Hazardous Waste Collection Event

The following items (below) will be accepted at the event. If you have other Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) to dispose of, please check the City's HHW webpage for information on proper disposal options.

City of San Diego Residential Tax Return Recycling
April 23, 25, 26 | 7am - 4:30pm
Miramar Recycling Center - 5165 Convoy Street, San Diego
Ready to clean up some space in your home file cabinet? You can securely dispose of old tax returns and related documents at this event.
- This drop-off service is FREE to City of San Diego residents only.
- All documents will be securely stored and shredded before being recycled.
- Only one banker’s box of residential tax files per resident is accepted. A banker’s box is approximately 10 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 25 inches deep.
- This event is for residential returns only - businesses can find recycling services by going to WasteFreeSD.org and searching for “Paper Shredding Services."
