DEL MAR - The City of Del Mar is asking the California Coastal Commission to delay additional work on shoring up the bluffs near the railroad tracks because it needs more time to consider the proposal.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the estimated $68 Million project would include 2,500 feet of new sea walls as well as other concrete and steel structures along with drainage ditches to help stop the bluffs from crumbling. The work would allow for freight and passenger rail traffic to continue for at least another 30 years while a new inland route is planned and eventually built.
Some Del Mar residents say pilings can be installed instead of the sea wall and others say there may need to be more than just one pedestrian access bridge to the beach.
