It’s Flag Day, a day on which we remember and honor the flag that was first created during the American Revolution.
On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution creating the “flag of the United States” with thirteen alternate stripes red and white” to represent the original thirteen colonies and white stars for the states that of course now number 50.
The first Flag Day observance was not until 100 years later, on June 14, 1877, and then in 1949, Congress officially designated the 14th of June a National Day of Observance.
The pledge to the American flag, the Pledge of Allegiance we all learned as kids, was adopted by Congress during the middle of World War II in 1942 and then on Flag Day in 1954, the words “under God” were added.
And the pledge was then widely recited in most schools across the country.
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of American and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
Most of us know those words or should. Especially right now, when much of the news is about what many Americans are thinking more about, democracy in the United States, after the unprecedented event at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th of 2021.
Something to think about on this June 14th, flag day, in 2022.
