1,500 Migrants Arrested Near Border

SAN DIEGO - Border Patrol agents in San Diego County arrested a large number of suspected illegal immigrants in just one weekend.

Customs and Border Protection says some 1,500 migrants were apprehended last weekend and a number maritime smuggling operations were disrupted by agents. Most of the migrants were from Mexico and Central America but others were from Venezuela, Brazil, and Romania. The agency says one of the largest groups consisted of 61 people, who were caught in the Tijuana River Valley south of Imperial Beach.

In addition to unlawful entries by land, agents responded to five reports of people trying to swim their way into the U.S., resulting in the arrest of 22 people.
