Giving Veterans a Hand-Up, Not a Handout

SAN DIEGO - Stand Down, an annual event aimed at giving veterans a hand up instead of a hand out, is back for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Hundreds of Veterans gathered at the weekend event, many at risk of facing homelessness and some who are already are homeless. Army Veteran Frank Tucker told reporting partner 10 News that he's struggling with health problems but that's not stopping him from volunteering at the event.

"I have stage three cancer— lung cancer," said Tucker. “They told me - no matter how bad I want to die, I’ve got to keep striving and the best way I know how is to help other veterans.”

The event offered free haircuts, clothing and other basic needs items as well as medical and legal services to help veterans with a variety of situations.
