Health Experts React to Newsom's Emergency Declaration over Monkeypox

SAN DIEGO - Local health care experts are reacting to Gov. Newsom's emergency declaration for the Monekypox outbreak.

Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego, tells reporting partner 10 News the declaration comes at a time when Monkeypox vaccines just aren't readily available.

“To be honest, there’s no vaccines to give," said Dr. Smith. "So, all of the allotment that’s been given to at least San Diego County that’s been used, to the best that they can get it out there."

But the declaration could help get more funding for local governments which could mean getting more vaccines. So far there are at least 30 confirmed cases of Monkeypox in San Diego County.
