Pilot Survives Small Plane Crash in El Cajon

A small plane made a crash landing in El Cajon Thursday but authorities say the pilot is expected to survive.

The CHP says the 65-year male pilot of a Cessna 195 apparently was trying to make an emergency landing on Interstate 8 when the plane hit a freeway bridge abutment and hit a car on Greenfield Drive below. CHP officer Travis Garrow told KOGO News the woman in the car was not hurt despite her vehicle being damaged.

The CHP began receiving calls at 10:35 a.m. that the plane had attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 8 near Greenfield Drive.  Upon California Highway Patrol’s arrival at the scene, it was discovered the pilot sustained major injuries because of the landing.  The pilot was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive. His name was not immediately released but the CHP says he lives in San Diego. During the landing, a Hyundai Santa Fe, being driven by a 57-year-old female from Alpine, sustained moderate damage.  The Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Greenfield Drive under Interstate 8 when it was struck.  The driver of the Hyundai was not injured.

The FAA and NTSB have been notified and were responding to the scene to begin the investigation.
