This being the first day of school for San Diego Unified means an exciting day and a nervous day.
More than 100,000 kids in the district head to class today after two and a half years of living through an historic pandemic. And several thousand teachers return to their classrooms that will no longer require wearing masks indoors.
Today is a day that will probably feel kind of different and kind of familiar at the same time. And for some time, teachers have been preparing and getting ready knowing what challenges this new school year could bring.
This past weekend, on the eve of classes starting in San Diego Unified, San Diego County’s five Teachers of the Year for 2022-23 were announced at the annual “Cox Presents Salutes Teachers” event sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union. The five teachers were selected from among 40 who were nominated, all of whom because they were considered to be outstanding at what they do.
Several of the teachers talked about the difficulties their students experienced during the last two years of COVID restrictions, with distance learning and wearing masks, especially, the teachers say, in social and emotional ways.
But they say they have found ways aimed at helping their kids get through it, get back to it and get adjusted to it all. And now...let the learning begin.
