Thanksgiving has its Roots in the Church

SAN DIEGO - As families gather across the nation for a meal, a number of people will also be gathering in prayer.

"It's not just a Christian holiday, it's a holiday for people of all faith but it has religious roots and not secular roots," says the The Very Rev. Penny Bridges, Senior Pastor at Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego.

Listen to the interview below:

Rev. Bridges says the day is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the blessings we have in our lives, including the blessing of living in the United States where freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution. She also says it can also be a day to love and serve our neighbors, especially those who are less fortunate than others.

"Giving to others, helping others to celebrate and to be fed and safe is just as important as giving thanks for all that we have ourselves," said Bridges.
