First Latina Elected Chair of Board of Supervisors

SAN DIEGO - The County Board of Supervisors has a new chairwoman.

Nora Vargas made history Tuesday when she was elected the first Latina chairwoman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Vargas has been on the board since 2021, representing communities in the South Bay.

As chair, the Tijuana-born, California-educated Democrat hopes to improve conditions for veterans, children and seniors in the region. Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer was elected vice-chair, meaning for the first time ever, the board will be lead by two women.

Vargas takes over for Nathan Fletcher, who stepped down in December after two years in the chairman role.
