PedWest Not Delivering Customers to Border Businesses: Report

SAN YSIDRO - The reopened PedWest border crossing is not delivering customers to nearby businesses.

That's according to The Border Report, which says shops have only reported a slight uptick in the number of customers in the two weeks since the crossing has been open. San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Wells told a Tijuana newspaper that only about a thousand people are crossing each day, well below the 20-thousand before the pandemic, but he hopes the number will increase in the coming weeks.

The PedWest crossing had been closed for more than two years due to COVID-related travel restrictions. The northbound lanes are only open from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., meaning those crossing back into Mexico will have to take the long way back and use PedEast near the San Diego Trolley station.

It's unclear when Customs and Border Protection will reopen the southbound lanes of PedWest and expand hours of operation.
