CSU System Develops Plan for Enrollment Challenges

LONG BEACH - Administrators announce a new plan to deal with enrollment challenges in the California State University system.

Campuses missing their enrollment targets by ten percent or more will permanently lose five percent of their funding and that funding will then be sent to campuses who have more students. Seven campuses are missing their enrollment targets: CSU Channel Islands, Chico State, Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal Maritime, Sonoma State and San Francisco State.

The system now has 25,000 fewer students than it did in 2020, according to CalMatters.

Reasons include students taking fewer classes, fewer students coming back after their first year and a big drop in transfers from the California Community College system, due in part to a major enrollment drop at those campuses.

The plan to reshuffle money from the lower attended campuses won't go into affect until the 2024-2025 school year, giving those schools time to get more students in classrooms.
