SAN DIEGO - After reversing course on a promise, an oversight panel is pushing for the San Diego County Sheriff to release internal documents related to in-custody death.
The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board voted six to three this week to recommend Sheriff Kelly Martinez publicly release internal reports examining critical incidents. But the recommendation from the review board is non-binding.
The vote comes two weeks after the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Martinez had reversed course on her promise made while she was Acting Sheriff, after the department announced it would only release one-page summaries of the incidents.
The recommendation to release the internal reviews was also made in a scathing state audit last year, which said San Diego County had some of the highest in-custody deaths in the state.
