UC San Diego Admits to Giving Male Researchers More Space

SAN DIEGO - An internal investigation found that UC San Diego has been unfairly favoring male researchers in one of its departments.

A campus task force found the university was not giving women enough lab and office space at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The study says women make up 26 percent of the faculty but occupy only 17 percent of the institute’s space.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports a deeper dive in to data shows that male scientists, on average, have more than twice as much research space than women, much bigger offices and far more storage space. Such disparities could ultimately impact female researchers' ability to publish papers and receive grants.

A management committee will reportedly address the issues noted in the study.
