Three Important Dates on the Calendar

Several important days are happening as we near the end of February over the next few days.

Today is an important day for Catholics and members of some other mainline Christian denominations.  It is Ash Wednesday, when believers go to church and have ashes put on their foreheads as a sign of confession and repentance. And the start of the season of Lent leading up to Easter in a few weeks.

This coming Friday is, February 24th, the day one year ago that Russian president Putin and announced its invasion of Ukraine, marking the start of the largest war in Europe since World War II and leading to tens of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees.

And coming up next Tuesday, February 28th, is the day that California’s COVID-19 state of emergency will expire, nearly three years after it began, ending what started in March of 2020, when the pandemic became official and changed all of our lives.

While these three days here at the end of February are only dates on a calendar, all three represent things that are probably most important to each of us. Our health, our safety and our life..

And that means these three days are likely to bring lots of reflection and lots of thoughts about what we’ve been through and what we are going through. And what’s ahead.
