Second Person Dies in San Diego County Sheriff's Custody

SAN DIEGO - A man has died in San Diego County Sheriff's custody just hours after being arrested.

Robert Shuey, 67, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Downtown Central Jail Tuesday night. Jail staff performed CPR until paramedics arrives, who pronounced Shuey dead at the scene.

The San Clemente resident was arrested in Oceanside on Monday on suspicion of DUI following a crash that seriously injured a motorcycle rider. He was first booked into the Vista Detention Facility before being transferred to the Central Jail.

he's the second person to die in Sheriff's custody so far this year. 20 people died in San Diego County Sheriff's custody last year. A recent state audit says San Diego County has one of the highest in-custody death rates in the state.
