Grandmother in East County Child Abuse, Torture Case granted Bail

EL CAJON - The woman accused of abusing and torturing her adopted grandchildren in San Diego County has been granted bail.

A judge granted bail for 70-year-old Adella Tom because of her age and medical issues and will be allowed to stay in San Bernardino County while wearing an ankle monitor, NBC 7 reported. Her release comes after a judge denied bail twice before.

Tom's husband Stanley and daughter Leticia McCormick are accused of the abuse, torture and murder of 11-year-old Arabella McCormick, who died last August. Prosecutors say the adoptive mother and grandparents deprived Arabella and her sisters of food, water and access to a restroom and subjected them extreme exercises.

The grandparents were at one time volunteers with the San Diego Police Department and McCormick was an elder with the Rock Church. McCormick's late husband Brian was a Border Patrol agent, but committed suicide when Sheriff's deputies tried to question him about Arabella's death.
