The San Diego State men’s basketball team is about to play its biggest game in its history.
And for San Diego, the Aztecs’ amazing run through the March Madness tournament and now playing for the national championship in college basketball, it would mean history as well.
Going into the game, the Aztecs are the underdogs among the vast majority of experts and oddsmakers. And on paper, it makes sense. The University of Connecticut snot only has an annual men’s basketball budget more than three times San Diego State’s budget… they have won four national basketball titles, the most of any school since 1999.
The Aztecs didn’t even have a NCAA tournament win until 2011, when they got to the Sweet Sixteen, with NBA star Kawhi Leonard on the team, but lost to guess who….the University of Connecticut, which went on to win the national championship that year.
Wouldn’t it be something if the Aztecs could find another way to win, as they have through March Madness and into April, just one more time, against the team that knocked them out of the tournament 12 years ago.
The national play by play guy called the San Diego State’s incredible and hard fought come-from-behind last second win on April Fool’s Day a miracle.
But many of those who know basketball and have watched the Aztecs all season long, are saying that only a fool would say they don’t have a chance of doing something that no San Diego sports team has ever done, won a national championship in a major college or professional sport. And tonight Aztec fans everywhere are saying together, “I believe that we will win.”
