How Far San Diego's Fallen Have Fell

You’ve heard and seen all the news reports about Nathan Fletcher, the former chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, and soon, and maybe sooner than he thinks, a former supervisor.

There are growing calls, so far, from mostly local Republicans and Republican organizations right now for him to resign as a county supervisor immediately and not wait till mid-May as he announced last week.

Up until the last two weeks, this former Marine, this once Republican-turned Democrat, Fletcher was running for a state senate seat and was considered by many of his fellow Democrats as someone who could be California’s governor one day. But now any future political success he may have had is seen by most experts as gone forever.

Sadly, for San Diego, Nathan Fletcher isn’t the only local political leader who has taken a fall over the not so recent years.

The names include former Mayor Bob Filner, who resigned and pleaded guilty to charges related to harassing and groping women. There was former Iraq War combat Marine and Congressman Duncan D. Hunter who was convicted of financial wrongdoing and cheated on his wife who divorced him…and while he was later pardoned by then President Trump, his political career was over. And there was Vietnam War fighter pilot ace Duke Cunningham, who spent years in prison for accepting bribes from defense contractors.

All four men, because of their actions, taking huge falls. These things happen not only in politics but in business and other circles as well. But they do serve as reminders of how pride or greed or arrogance can lead to some life changing stumbles no matter who you are.
