Will 2024 Be a Deja Vu Year All Over Again?

It’s still way too early to know what will happen, but with President Biden’s official announcement now that he is running for re-election, things could be shaping up for a repeat of the 2020 presidential campaign.

Donald Trump has been campaigning for the 2024 Republican nomination for months already, even before he officially announced it. The most recent polls show a race between Biden and Trump would be very close again if held today.

One poll this week we told you about here on San Diego’s Morning News showed that most Americans would rather not have either of them as president again.

There are a lot of Democrats who say they would prefer someone else besides Biden as their nominee. And there are a lot of Republicans who don’t want Trump to be their nominee. Both men have lower approval ratings and either of them would be the oldest presidents.

If Biden and Trump are the two major party candidates in 2024 it will be the first time the same presidential nominees square off against each other in consecutive elections since 1956 when President Eisenhower beat Senator Adlai Stevenson.

Of course with a year and a half to go before the 2024 election, a lot can happen yet with their campaigns, with the courts and with their health. But in the end America’s voters will decide if a new face will be the new resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
