Why Worry About Rising Global Temperatures?

So how worried should we be about the reports this week that the average global temperature reached record highs on Monday and Tuesday and may again today.

With the record average temperature on Earth of nearly 63 degrees according to the scientists, it doesn’t seem like it would be that big a deal.

The people who live in Texas would gladly welcome an average temperature right now of 63 degrees, with the 100 plus degree heat they’ve had for the past few weeks. And with the National Weather Service locally reporting this week that San Diego’s average monthly temperature in June was cooler than usual, a lot of beachgoers would welcome more heat here.

But there are some noted climate change scientists and professors are warning that the rise in the average global temperature is a big deal.

As one put it this week, the back-to-back records are “totally unprecedented and terrifying.”

Another says the higher global temps are a consequence of climate change caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions along with an El Nino, the weather pattern that brings warmer air from the Pacific Ocean that happens every two to seven years.

As a result, one scientist says this will almost certainly be the warmest year on record.

Good news for beach lovers in San Diego. Bad news for outdoor barbeque lovers in Texas.
