Tropical Storm Hilary brought lots of rain, some flooded streets, river rescues, some strong winds and led to dozens of traffic accidents Sunday.
As of Sunday evening rainfall amounts in San Diego County ranged from 1 1/2 inches at the coast to close to 3 inches in the inland valleys to about 7 inches on Mt Laguna.
San Diego Fire Rescue Department officials say 13 people had to be rescued when the San Diego River flooded a homeless encampment in the Morena area. Swift water rescue crews helped the group walk out of knee-deep water in the riverbed near Morena Boulevard and Friars Road Sunday night. Two people were being evaluated for hypothermia. Officials say they were reports of 15 to 20 people stuck in the riverbed. Crews searched for any other victims until the search was called off about 9:45 p.m. In a separate rescue, crews were sent to help two people on a boat that was being pushed against rocks off Harbor Island about 9:25 p.m.
A tree fell on a home in University ]City Sunday afternoon as Tropical Storm Hilary moved through the area. There were reports of trees falling in several communities. A mudslide closed all lanes of Interstate 8 at In-Ko-Pah on Sunday afternoon, according to CalTrans. At San Diego International Airport, more than 200 flight have been canceled according to FlightAware
San Diego Unified Cancels Classes on First Day of New School Year
San Diego Unified School District has canceled in-person classes and activities for Monday, Aug. 21 to mitigate potential impacts from Hilary. "Postponing the first day will allow the district to assess any impact to sites and offices and ensure they are prepared to welcome students and families to the new school year," according to a news release from the SDUSD.
All campuses and facilities of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) will be closed on Monday.
