All the news about the hurricane about to hit Florida is drawing a lot more attention from people here in San Diego.
Having just gone through a Tropical storm ourselves, listening to the National Weather Service forecasts and the warnings from local officials to prepare for heavy rain and flooding and strong winds, we can all better relate to what the people in Florida are doing.
Of course, for us it was a once in a generation incident of a Tropical Storm hitting San Diego. And it turned out not to be all that bad despite fears that it would.
In Florida, though, hurricanes are an annual event, so they know how to prepare and they don’t take them lightly. Friends there have described going through hurricanes in the past with stories of spending a scary overnight for hours in a bathroom.
But Floridians know how to hunker down as the hurricane approaches and many know how to evacuate sooner than later. They know how to load up on sandbags and cover windows and glass doors.
Here in San Diego, we don’t have as much time to prepare for a wildfire. But we’ve learned what to do when they happen.
And late last night, when that earthquake hit off the coast near the Mexican border, and was felt across the county, it was a small reminder of needing to always be prepared.
